Playlists I Made for my Kids

I'm a bad singer. This is quite painful in Young Women where I really wish I could sing all high and beautiful like a lady because someone's got to. Even though I can't sing, I do sing along to regular music that I like and by regular music that I like I mean music other than church music, such as Neil Diamond. I was doing this today and when Sweet Caroline came on I think I made a big mistake. Just because I cannot sing high does not, necessarily, mean that I can hit low notes. But when Neil Diamond says, "We fill it up with only two." I tried to get my voice as low as his manly Jewish bass. I think I may have done some damage. I thought I could will it to happen, but it didn't.

What follows is an addendum to this short anecdotal blog which includes the compilation cds I've made for my kids, including Ben's--which contains Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. It will give you a lot of insight into my children's personalities and into my hopes for them. It's a little personal, but I don't mind sharing.

2 year old Ben's is the danciest mix that I've made yet because he is inclined in that way.

One Step Beyond by Madness
Octopus's Garden by Ringo Starr
I Think I Love You by The Partridge Family
Oh l'amour by Erasure
Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain and Tennille
Don't Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John and Kiki Dee
Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond
Bandstand Boogie by Barry Manilow
Moondance by Van Morrison
Having a Party by Rod Stewart
I Believe by Chris Isaak
Cowboy Man by Lyle Lovett
Graceland by Paul Simon
Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
Blood Brothers by Bruce Springsteen
He ain't Heavy, He's my Brother by Neil Diamond
Sunshine on my Shoulders by Jonn Denver
You and Me Against the World by Helen Reddy
I Believe in You by Bob Dylan

This is a good kid's cd. He likes it. As you can see it winds down at the end for falling asleep purposes, but not without a little important indoctrination from Helen Reddy, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan. It takes a village.

Maggie's cd is a little different. She needs to be armed to live in a world that only Annie Lennox and En Vogue can prepare her for:

Daybreak by Barry Manilow
Our House by Madness
Brown-Eyed Girl by Van Morrison
Everlasting Love by U2
Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves by Eurythmics
Free Your Mind by En Vogue
I am Woman by Helen Reddy
Penny Lane by The Beatles
Your Childhood by The Proclaimers
Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond
Shower the People by James Taylor
At My Most Beautiful by REM
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel
Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot by Sting
By Your Side by Sade
Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

And Sam, who is fast approaching the age of accountability, needed a cd that would get him up in the morning, put him to sleep at night and, at the same time, teach him all of my philosophies about life:

Our House by Madness (all my kids love this song and really, Madness is much better for kids than so-called "children's music")
3 Little Birds by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen
Beautiful Day by U2
Can't Smile Without You by Barry Manilow
Stand by REM
Missionary Man by Eurythmics
Boris the Spider by the Who
Yellow Submarine by The Beatles
Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head by BJ Thomas
Man Gave Names to All of the Animals by Bob Dylan
The More I Believe by the Proclaimers
Church by Lyle Lovett
(What's so funny 'bout) Peace Love and Understanding by Elvis Costello
The Boat that I Row by Neil Diamond
Shilo by Neil Diamond
The Stolen Child by the Waterboys

I'm happy to "burn" cds for you of any of these kiddie tunes. It's my pleasure. Sometimes I do this instead of blogging--that's why I brought it up.

  1. What a beautifully genious idea! I have focused all my attention on learning to blog, and haven't figured out how to find the music I like and burn CDs. My husband has burned a few for me (a few years back). He calls them my "house cleaning" songs. They include N'Sync and Britney Spears. I'm so not cool. I love your song choices for your kids!

  2. I love them all. Wow. If I send you three blank cds and reply envelope, will you burn them for me?

  3. also, when I was a sophomore at BYU, I used to do jumping jacks in my room to "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" because it was just the right tempo and exactly 5 minutes long.

  4. Do you think you could burn something for Holden about discipline? I'd start with "Baby Did a Bad Thing" by Chris Isaak. Or you could do something about wearing jeans? "Forever in Blue Jeans" by Neil Diamond would be a good start. You are right, it DOES take a village.

  5. I, like Marcy, would love copies if you are ready and willing to accept my 3 blank CDs and self-addressed envelope.

I love mixes. I love real albums occasionally, but mostly I love mixes.

  6. Cds for everyone! I'd be happy to tailor something to you specifically. And since you aren't 5 I could include "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" and not worry about sexualizing you. (I left it off her cd for that reason.)In fact, I could include all kinds of explicit lyrics.

  7. I would love to jump on the 3 cd reply envelope bandwagon! These are super fun mixes! Especially, if you put "Girl, you'll be a woman". Wow. I'm getting excited right now! Explicit lyrics here we come

  9. Mixes are fine I guess - they multiply around here like rabbits - but how do you isolate one song if you just want to send a particular song that seems to say just what you want to say to someone - and not have it be a big deal - like a little note (pardon the pun - it's the family I come from - or at least the one I married into and helped create) you send in the mail. Do I make myself clear?

  10. Kacy, I'm going to be honest. I want copies of all 3 CD's but I probably won't send you 3 blank CD's in the mail with a stamped return envelope thing because all of that requires leaving the house and running WAY too many errands. I have a new policy regarding 3 children at a post office or Wal-Mart. I also have a new policy about not going anywhere where I have to be wearing a clean shirt and shoes...that's why I love Wal-Mart! :>)

And don't think I'm not going to add "Survivor" (Destiny's Child) and "Hit Me Baby One More Time" to Hannah's mix. When is a good age to introduce the wee ones to The Cure?

  11. Kacy--I will get some CDs in the mail ASAP and feel free to change up whatever---I trust your taste and would also love to be sexualized by "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" too..or any other cool sexualizing songs for that matter.

  12. I’m not sure if this is what you’re thinking of, Barb, but you can send single songs to specific people (like a “note”), through instant messaging, for example. Hannah introduced me to that. Throw copyright laws to the wind, I say. Diatribe: I personally consider doing what I want with digital music “fair use.” Especially since I still buy albums and go to concerts. For example, against better financial judgment, I am planning to spend what I could/should be spending on a car payment/the month’s utilities/a great new spring outfit to buy U2 concert tickets 9 months ahead of time, while the members of U2 continue to live the high life. So maybe I will trade U2 bootlegs over the Internet if I want to. Take that, Bono!

Kacy, I need your address, but I’m guessing Barbara has it, so expect a little present sometime soon. How much would postage be for 3 CDs, anyway? I guess I’ll find out.

  13. I am elated--you don't understand--no one has ever wanted me to make them a cd. Of course, that hasn't stopped me. And poor sick Nate, how soon can you get that ska mix to me? I mean, I know you're not feeling well but . . .

  15. Don't ever let anyone tell you that Yellow Submarine is a drug song. The drugs were named after the song, not the other way around. Thought you might like to know.
