I Want U2 Some More

In case you are wondering, U2 was in God's country Saturday and it was worth half my house payment for me and Christian to go. Hmmm. Now maybe you think I live in really nice house. Excellent. U2 doesn't disappoint*, even though Bono's pants do. He is a handsome man and no one cares that he is thick and short. But there are options for shorter, thicker people (believe me, I know) that flatter and create a more modern silhouette. Here are some of them: a dressier plain-front trouser for Bono, a cargo pant for Bono, a BLUE jean for Bono that doesn't taper at the calf, anything that does NOT look like leggings at the end of the night.

Christian and I went to the concert with my sister Carly. On the ride up we had an intellectual conversation about capital punishment which led (as it always does) to a discussion of U2's No Exit and the question of what Bono would wear. During the concert Christian busied himself filming (with his phone) people in the audience who danced funny while Carly and I figured out what some of our favorite U2 songs are about. Here are some of the people we think Bono is singing about: Winona Ryder, Jesus, and Yahweh.

There were many highlights and only one low-light. One of these highlights was when Bono pretended to take his heart out and throw it to me. I pretended to catch it. And then I threw my heart back. Not everyone interpreted this interaction the same way but whatever. Bono acted out a short Abu Ghraib play on the stage. This was the low-light that I mentioned before. I don't like how it made me feel. I like how I felt when Bono raced the Edge around the stage super fast. That made me feel invincible. Most of the time I worry that Bono will trip--but not then!

But here is what I really need to tell you. During the performance Bono pulled two women and a child on stage at various times during the performance. This doesn't really enhance the concert for me as it only makes me jealous or distract me from the matter at hand (getting my groove on). At any rate, after the concert I went to my mom's family Christmas party where my generous and cool cousin from Las Vegas had drawn my name for the gift exchange. I had drawn my cousin Rhonda's name and I got her a Whitman's Sampler from Albertson's for 8.99 (just to put this in perspective). My present was a DVD. "It's the concert you went to last night!" Indeed, my cousin had given me the DVD of the Chicago show of the U2 tour. Awesome.

Get this: I eagerly watched it that night. The time came for Bono to spontaneously pull a lady out of the crowd. And so he did. And it is the same lady he pulled out of the crowd in Salt Lake City! I suh-wear. So what is the deal with that? You tell me.

  1. She probably pays MORE then half her house payment to see U2 and he knows this... You might consider investing more in your favorite performer.

One time Bono pulled a friend of mine out of the crowd up on stage with him. We had both met him the night before, and she had given him this big peace flag she'd made. He'd wanted to sign it and give it back to her, since she put so much work into it and he wouldn't be able to keep it--think about how many rabid fans must give him stuff--but she wanted him to see what she'd written on it. So he took it, and then pulled her up on stage the next day. Me and another friend, who were severals rows back, were jumping up and down, hugging each other and screaming.

    Best concert ever.

  3. I did notice the pants. I thought he was trying to take back the 80's. They were very 'With or Without You.'

  4. Doesn't Bono get lots of free clothes and stuff for being all awesome? Maybe he was trying to make a statement by wearing leggings. We'll all be wearing them this time next year when the trend is more mainstream.

Weren't you impressed by how tenderly he treated the American Flag? It gave us all something to think about.

  6. One of my favorite U2 songs of all time? "With Or Without You."

One reason to enjoy it considerably less? That booty clown he pulled up on stage.

Maybe if I wore a halter top and Uggs, I would get pulled out of the crowd more often.

    Or a Santa tube dress.

I'm also glad to see that your sister went with you and Christian, because that's exactly how our evening went (well, most evenings we spend together are like that). Eliza, Matt... and me. Matt texted his friend and told him that he had brought along his second wife.

  7. I think I may have dissed Bono on your earlier post, and I am SO sorry. I have been born again. I can't even conceive of a better concert--unless they were to play Bad. But even though they didn't, I just couldn't feel disappointed. It was my first, so I may sound naive and all, but it was a concert for the ages. They ended with '40' for crying out loud! Is it possible to feel the spirit as strongly as when Bono first appears magically at the end of the cat-walk? Or when (as you mentioned) Bono and Edge chase each other? Or occasionally when you realize that that is really Bono singing, and the other members playing?

  8. They played Bad when we saw them in Oakland, but no chasing. I guess you can't have everything.

I was mainly disappointed in Larry Mullen's greaser gas-station-attendant look. How I used to love him! Sigh!

  9. That's weird because I really enjoyed Larry Mullen Jr.'s look--much more than EVER before. It's all about Larry now for me (especially now that I know Bono's spontaneous invitations to dance with him on stage are fake).

  10. Are you all trying to tell me not to peg my pants anymore?

  11. I read Chris's blog about U2 also. I have broken a commandment and must repent. But to truly repent you need to stop the sin, right? I guess I'll just go to hell, coveting all the way.

ps I hate when rich famous people who can hire trainers and nutritionists bring fashions in to style that only in shape rich famous people can look good in. Let's all boycott the peg legs--for hips sake!

  12. I knew I'd love your assesment of the U2 concert. You do not disappoint Kacy! You sound like you've watched one too many episodes of "What Not to Wear". Truly, plain-front pants would do Bono well.

  13. I'm curious if you like the song "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)".

Because I'm not the biggest fan of Zooropa either but I LOVE that song.

  14. Yes. I like that song. I also like Lemon.

  15. You really need to lay off Zooropa. It is the least of U2's albums, I will agree, but that still makes it one of the very best albums you can buy.

The way "Zooropa" starts slowly and builds sets the mood for the whole album. The Edge is just fantastic on "Numb", "Lemon" features Bono in the high notes but still sounding strong, and "Daddy's Gonna Pay" tells a good story. "Some Days Are Better Than Others" has great lines that come back to me occasionally when one of those bad things happens--then I remember the song and it cheers me up. For example: "Some days are bouncers and won't let you in." Don't you ever feel like that? And getting Johnny Cash to join them for "The Wanderer" is classic!

The best I am leaving for last--one of U2's greatest songs: "Stay, (Faraway, So Close!)". If you do not break down when you hear that song, let me send you a slightly slower, orchestral version of it that will haunt you.
