I Honestly Love You: Songs That are Too Intimate

I want to start by saying that I really like the song, "Lady In Red" by Chris De Burgh. I am so intrigued by the sincerity of Chris De Burgh's voice. And the things he says! "I have never had such a feeling of complete and utter love." Who sings about utter love? It's so intimate.

There are a lot of songs that I imagine the singer is singing to/about me. For example, I always imagine that Bono is singing "Spanish Eyes" about me (my eyes are brown or "Spanish"). I also like to imagine that Sting's song, "You still Touch Me" is about me (he can't get over me--it's sort of sad). But I never imagine Chris De Burgh is singing to me. First of all, I don't wear red very often and second of all, I do not know Chris De Burgh well enough for him to talk to me that way. It's more like I'm listening in on a VERY private conversation. A little too private. One that should not have been turned into a song. I mean, it ends with a whispered "I love you." If I overheard that conversation I would feel embarrassed. His voice is all quivery and sincere. It's almost too much. If you listen to "Don't Pay the Ferryman" you will notice that he sings with the same kind of fervor. It cheapens "Lady in Red."

The other song that I feel just a little guilty over-hearing but enjoy in spite of the inappropriateness of broadcasting such feelings on the radio is Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch." Holy cow. I cannot imagine Dan Hill singing that to me. The honesty is too much! Dan Hill strikes me as a strange and volatile man--wanting at once to hold his beloved until he dies and then wanting to break her and bring her to her knees. What does that mean? Does he secretly hate her? It's so complicated. If I were him I would not admit my ambivalence.

The female vocalist's equivalent of these songs is Olivia Newton John's "I Honestly Love You." She's all, "I'm not trying to make you feel uncomfortable. . . but I honestly love you." And her voice is so tentative and vulnerable. It does make me feel uncomfortable. I'm afraid she's going to get hurt.

I don't know what it was about the 70s and early 80s that inspired such sincerity. Rod Stewart's "Lost In You" is a little easier for me to take. He starts with some small talk as one should, "How's your Mama, how's the weather." Then--in true Rod Stewart fashion--takes a rather personal and explicit turn. "I want to make love to you like 15 men." Interesting. This is a very different tone and one that better reflects, I believe, the optimism and braggadocio of the decade. This was before 9/11, you realize.

Lyrics below, if you think you can handle it and you are a voyeur.

SPANISH EYES: Wey hey hey, baby hang on Wey hey hey, baby hang on Empty heart, beat tight as a drum Said empty love, she'd shine like a song Wey hey hey, baby hang on (to anything) Our love shines like rain In those Spanish eyes Spanish eyes Wey hey hey, here she comes She comes in colors You know she gonna turn the daylight on 'cause I love the way you talk to me And I love the way you walk on me And I need you more Oh, than you need me Our love shines like rain In those spanish eyes Spanish eyes I'll cross the world for green and gold But it's those Spanish eyes That get me home...home again Wey hey hey, baby hang on Wey hey hey, you know that The night is young Dazzled by lights that shine in your eyes I'm standing in the shadows And wait for the night Forever in fever, forever in heat You pick me up to put me out on the street Wey hey hey, baby hang on, hang on Wey hey hey, baby hang on, hang on 'cause I love the way you talk to me And I love the way you're mean to me And I need you.

YOU STILL TOUCH ME :Another night finds me alone In my dreams You still touch me Your picture by my telephone In that smile You still thrill me Now if I sleep I sleep here alone In my bed tonight You still haunt me And if I'm falling I'm falling like a stone In my nightmares You still hold me And after all that we've been through Now I'm wondering If you still blame me If only half of this was true That you believe of me You still shame me Dark rain will fall until I see your face I close my eyes I seem to hear the raindrops saying You won't come back You still touch me And when I'm sick at heart and low In my prayers You still heal me When I'm so sure, so sure this isn't so In my complacency You still shake me I wonder if you feel the same way as I do And you'd come back You still touch me Another night finds me alone In my bed tonight You still haunt me You still hold me You still touch me You still touch me You still touch me Another night Another night Another night Another finds me alone.

THE LADY IN RED:I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight I've never seen you shine so bright I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance They're looking for a little romance Given half a chance And I've never seen that dress you're wearing Or the highlights in your hair That catch your eyes I have been blind
CHORUS The lady in red is dancing with me Cheek to cheek There's nobody here It's just you and me It's where I wanna be But I hardly know this beauty by my side I'll never forget the way you look tonight
I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight I've never seen you shine so bright you were amazing I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side And when you turned to me and smiled it took my breath away And I have never had such a feeling such a feeling Of complete and utter love, as I do tonight
CHORUS
I never will forget the way you look tonight The lady in red My lady in red (whispered) I love you.
SOMETIMES WHEN WE TOUCH:You ask me if I love you
And I choke on my reply
I'd rather hurt you honestly
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you
On what you say or do?
I'm only just beginning to see the real you
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
Romance and all its strategy
Leaves me battling with my pride
But through the insecurity
Some tenderness survives
I'm just another writer
Still trapped within my truth
A hesitant prize fighter
Still trapped within my youth
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly
At times I understand you
And I know how hard you've tried
I've watched while love commands you
And I've watched love pass you by
At times I think we're drifters
Still searching for a friend
A brother or a sister
But then the passion flares again
And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
I HONESTLY LOVE YOU: Maybe I hang around here A little more than I should We both know I got somewhere else to go But I got something to tell you That I never thought I would But I believe you really ought to knowI love youI honestly love you You don't have to answer I see it in your eyes Maybe it was better left unsaid This is pure and simple And you should realize That it's coming from my heart and not my head I love youI honestly love you I'm not trying to make you feel uncomfortable I'm not trying to make you anything at all But this feeling doesn't come along everyday And you shouldn't blow the chance When you've got the chance to say I love you I honestly love you If we both were born In another place and time This moment might be ending in a kiss But there you are with yours And here I am with mine So I guess we'll just be leaving it at thisI love you I honestly love you I honestly love you.

  1. Growing up, I LOVED Air Supply and then I found out about Air Supply (*wink, wink*) and now I feel all squimish when I hear their music. It's a little too intimate, like you said about the others, but in a weirder kind of way. You know what I mean. It's still good, though, so I listen to it anyway.

  2. I was going to mention Air Supply! ALL of their songs are like that. It's a turn off.

  3. Poor Olivia N-J. I wonder if she thinks of this song now that her runaway boyfriend has been sighted. I noticed you did not bring up "Take On Me" by Aha, but thinking back, it was really quite hard to understand the lyrics so unless you read them. The whole..."You're shying away...I'll be coming for you anyway." Very intense.

  4. And I forgot the lyrics to "The Sun Always Shines on TV"...

  5. In U2's Beautiful Day there is a part where he says, "Touch me. . ." and I always sing, "the sun always shines, on tv" right after because it totally sounds like it. Listen to it. You'll feel me. (Then you can listen to Stuck in a Moment and sing "stuck in Hans Moleman" like I do.)

  6. Reading all of those lyrics in a row kind of creeps me out.

  7. That musical era was my young adult years so many of the songs you mentioned I know, only because the radio ran them in the ground when they were popular. Although there is one song I never understood, The Pina Colada Song.
"It was my own lovely lady...". After placing an ad in the personals and discovering that your spouse had too, what in the name of Sam Hill can they be thinking to laugh it off? These folks need some serious counseling!

  8. I used to love the Pina Coloda song--mostly because I loved those pina coloda life savers.

  9. My spouse told me that Lady in Red was written for his wife who he had repeatedly cheated on (thanks VH1...)

I hope she took him back...that song is hot.

  10. I meant Chris De Burgh's wife (not my spouse's wife...as that would be me, and I don't look good in red.)

  11. Whenever I sing the lyrics to Beautiful Day, I sing "Touch me....take me to your special place."

Why do I sing gross things like that? Those aren't the words!

  12. I always enjoyed how CdB whispers, "Cheek to cheek." You're right, that song is so quivery and intimate. Not for public ears.

  13. Speaking of U2, in "Mysterious Ways" I thought I heard "Shamu, the mysterious whale!" the first time I listened to it. Frankly, I'm amazed Sea World hasn't marketed with these lyrics yet.

  14. Did we purposefully avoid Dave Matthews Band--he's got all sorts of "panty-droppers"! I mean, these are mainstream songs that we listened to in front of our mother and she had no idea I was secretly blushing--waiting for her to realize how...inappropriate...and she just never did, bless her.

  15. Yikes, Abby! You're so right about Dave Matthews. I never paid attention before.

  17. Baby cows know utter love.

    Sorry, I could not resist.

I must have a very high filth tolerance. I also rarely listen to song lyrics.

I remember my mom and dad chaperone-ing a youth dance and hearing the "sometimes when we touch" song. One of the girls present told my mom and dad that this was her and her boyfriend's SONG. My parents would bust out in song for weeks afterward and would laugh their heads off, incredulity of the "touching" lyrics.

  18. Sorry this is so late - just found your blog and even the comments are hilarious! Dying laughing over here!

Bono is a hottie. Shamu the mysterious whale, indeed.

  19. Dan Hill sings to a woman who is a friend of him and with whom he is starting to fall in love, but she is a little ahead of him, so he is totally falling in love and at the same time he feels that he is put under pressure, which is why he sometimes wants to 'break her'. At least that is what I think - but of course I only think that because once I was totally falling in love with a friend who was already in love with me and I felt sometimes that I was put under pressure ;). And since that all worked out and the friend is now my boyfriend for almost four years, I don't feel like a voyeur listening to 'sometimes when we touch' at all ;).

Excuses if my English is clumsy, I'm Dutch and found your website accidentally searching for lyrics

  20. I agree totally wih all of this, and I woul add that one pedophile song where the vocalist guy is literally wailing inagony cuz he can't get with the fifteen year old. Know the one I mean? ("She's just 15 years old, blah, blah, blah...If I could fly, I'd pick you up and take you into the night") Scary. Also, Lady in Red worked its mojo at the Valentine's Day 1987 Quad Stake Dance to which I wore a red dress and danced cheek to cheek with the then-love-of-my-life. I hold Chris de Burgh personally responsible for whatever sort of over-the-top making out may or may not have happened that night.

Also--and this has cemented in my mind that you and I are bffs who haven't met yet, sister from another misters--every single timeI hear Beautiful Day (except when poor Lee from American Idol was fored to butcher it this year), Bono says "Touch me" and I say, "How can it be? Believe me: the sun always shines on TV."

[and you tell me thatI don't love you when you know that it's just not true]
