Some Dogs Like Me, And Some Dogs Don't

Some people think it's boring and stop reading when I post pictures of my pets.

Those people are dumb. I haven't had a foster dog in a while because we took in a litter of kittens for 8 weeks. They are now weaned and ready to be adopted. Cats bug. But what am I gonna do? Not feed and clean up after a mother cat and her five babies for 8 weeks?
Ruthie was the dog we almost adopted permanently. Everyone loved her. I'm not going to lie to you--most of these dogs I foster have issues. Not Ruthie. What I loved best about her was her gigantic human-like head.
Dodger is the dog we are fostering now. Dodger is a Puggle, (Pug+Beagle). I think it must be embarrassing to be a "Puggle." By the way, he doesn't always get to sleep on the bed.
My relationship with Dodger has led me to ask the philosophical question, "Would I just like anybody who likes me?" Because Dodger loves me. It's kind of weird and a little pathological. I like it. Dodger has followed me around since the second I brought him out of the kennel. He would only come out for me--how endearing is that? He just prefers my company over anyone else. What's not to like?

So now I'm thinking about people and what it takes for me to like them. I'm not all that social and don't mind being alone, so I always thought I was very discriminating. But I think maybe I like anyone who likes me. I'm not sure, but I think that might be true. I'm thinking about the people I like and the one thing they have in common is that they like me. Also, the more certain I am that they like me the more I like them. If I don't know for sure that someone likes me, I might wait and reserve judgment. And then if it turns out that they don't like me I'll probaby decide I hate them. Hmm. Interesting. I can't think of a single person that I hate who likes me, except for a few people who think they know me and like me but don't really know me and if they did would hate me.

I will like anyone who likes me, I guess. I'm easy. Especially if they like my blog, in particular.

If you like me, you might like Dodger. You can adopt him on Saturday at the Petsmart in American Fork. Think of all you'll have to talk about! I must admit, that is a conversation I'd love to listen in on.

  1. That first dog picture....THAT'S the dog I wanted.

Well, if I wanted a dog...that'd be the dog I'd want.

  2. I remember. You love Border Collies.

  3. I love the comments about liking people who like you. So if I was one that liked, admired and idolized you then does that mean I am one of your favorite people? Ha.
    I miss our chats.

  4. I miss our chats too, Julienne. And I like you EXACTLY as much as you like me.

  5. Well, *everyone* likes your blog, so I guess you've got it made.

  6. That is EXACTLY my philosophy on friends! I am glad to find it written down somewhere. I think I may pin it to my shirt at church.

  7. I like the Puggle (cute and earnest) even though I don't like dogs. I wasn't aware that that might be an embarrassing combination (pug + beagle). I have so much to learn about the animal kingdom and so little interest! But I AM interested in YOU! (Do you find me interesting?)

  8. Well, sometimes I think we love each other, sometimes we like each other, and at times we have tolerated each other. Or you have tolerated me while I still liked you and tried to convince you to like me. Nope, your logic may be flawed in this. I'll have to think about it and get back to you.

I do like your hair, though. Do you like mine?

  9. Don't be silly, Heidi. I love you and your hair.

Hey guys, it's so funny when Lisa talks about dogs isn't it!

  10. I think you may have just articulated what most friendships are like. Or at least how I am about friends. Thank you. So insightful!

I have a cockapoo (cocker spaniel/poodle mix). Who thought up that name. It's embarrassing. we bought her for the kids (I am not an animal person), but this dog likes me way too much. So I feel a little guilty for not liking her back as much. Guess the theory works better on people for me.

  11. Just so you know ... I have a tremendous crush on you.

  12. Very curious. I'm wondering who likes who first? For instance, what if both parties are waiting for the other person or dog to like them? In that case, you wouldn't like someone who's just like you. That would be a bummer. I just need to map this all out so I'm understanding the logistics. Likings should be predictable in some way.

I think liking is vastly underrated. There aren't many like songs out there being written. Why not? I think it's discrimination against Plato. There might be a class action suit in this.

Myself, I've always had the idea that people who like me must be quite naive, and so I have a lot of pity on them, which then causes me to like them. Or I'll have a like-hate relationship, where they like me and I hate myself. Those are interesting. Or I simply like people who don't have such annoying personality traits that make you want to run out in the street and hail the next bus to do you a favor. I'm pretty flexible that way.

Oh, also, can you just save us some time and tell us those things about you we might hate if we really knew you?

  13. I don't even know you that well, but I do like you, and your love of dogs. I love dogs too! Please like me!

I actually have a puggle and she is the best dog! No barking too much like a beagle, no breathing issues like pugs. And very loving!

Thanks for the deep thoughts about likability.

  14. Hey! I am proud to be a puggle!!!! Glad your puggle loves you. Thanks for taking care of Dodger until someone can adopt him. Mr. Puggle

  15. Dodger looks cute. I think my sister has a puggle, and she's quite fugly in pictures, but in real life she's very cute because she's such a good dog. That picture with your little one and the kitty makes me crap my pants a little from all the cuteness.

I came to the conclusion about a year ago that, everyone I meet WANTS to like me! And that doesn't mean it always happens, but now I know that since everyone WANTS to like me, I want to like them, so I give them a fair shot until something happens. Like finding out they're lame or something.

  16. I am happy Mr. Puggle found your blog.

  17. Some times the things people say stick with me. And some time ago, one Chris Clark (maybe you know and like him) said that he didn't think he could be friends with someone who wasn't attracted to him in some way. And I think I'm sort of the same way. And so I get what you're saying. And I REALLY like you. Does that make you like me? Or are you a little afraid?

    Let's go see more movies...

I am the same way with like me/like you. If I'm not sure about you, I will keep my distance, usually. Not too long ago, I found out that someone I thought TOTALLY hated me (so I didn't really like her much in return) actually thought I was pretty cool. I love her now. :)

I like you, by the way. I'm a notorious lurker, but I'm trying to do better about speaking up.

    I like you.

  20. Well, good to know - you really do like me!

PS - Despite the embarrassing name, puggles must at least be a pretty smart breed if they can log on and comment.

  21. I love puggles. I don't have one and have a love/hate for my current dog. So much so, I don't plan to have another. But I love puggles.

  23. I like you too. And Dodger. And, just in case Christian has the same like/hate policy, I like him too.

  24. How sweet are those dogs?!

As I was reading this post I got completely sidetracked by that photo of junior mints and then I saw that you eat them frozen! This I have to try. I have a real thing for junior mints.

I found you through Underdogs by the way.

  25. I like you because I usually like people who are like me. And you have brown hair and brown eyes. Like me.

    Happy birthday!

P.S. I think it's really, really sweet what Christian wrote.

  26. I love this post so much, I keep coming back to reread it.

  27. Just read your post mentioning Dodger was eventually put down; ouch...I'm reading this post and wishing I could fly cross country, back-in-time and rescue little Dodger. If I didn't already have 3 dogs.

Our fostering record is a bit dismal. There was the gorgeous irish setter who fought our great pyrenees, climbed the fence and then ran away from the people who adopted him. Then Smokey...who we've had for 2 years and who has been on a 3-week house visit only to be returned because he was shy around the kids. We're pretty sure he's mentally handicapped, but he's so sweet and he LOVES the great pyrenees and he keeps the yard clean by eating the poop...can we really send him back to the pound now??
