Meet Ellen

In case you are new to blogging (and I don't see why you would be--it's totally on it's way out at this point) and are interested in me and my family I thought I'd take the beginning of the year to introduce them to you. And as always, no pervs or stalkers.

My youngest daughter is Ellen. She's two but it really is true that she talks like a 5 year old. Once I said she had the vocabulary of a twenty year old, but that was an exaggeration. Of course, my last 5 year old was selectively mute so my frame of reference could be off. What is most striking about Ellen and her talking is her intonation and gestures. She's also just very bizarre. Today she pretended to pour me a cup of tea from a chewed up rawhide bone while asking in a British accent if I'd like a biscuit.
I guess I'm just trying to psyche myself up about her because I am weaning her off her pacifier and it is very difficult. A few months ago at church a precocious little girl told me that Ellen was too old to be using a pacifier. I hope my kids never ever say that to anyone. It's a turn off.
Not only is Ellen's pose awesome, I also made that skirt she's wearing. I made it while she sucked on a pacifier in the corner.

  1. I have been ruminating on a post about my verbose 2 year old. He recently told me that "smacking bad guys" was "responsible." But what I really want to know is, what kind of Brits is your daughter exposed to? I've never known any who would condone such a degradation of the national beverage!

  2. My kids say things like that. They say to strangers, "Why are you so fat?" and "Are you a mom? 'Cause you look like a dad."

    So appreciative of this.

And I used to think pacifiers were stupid, but that's before I had a daughter who scratches holes in her face while she sucks her fingers.

  4. I once saw a big kid in the audience of the Rosie ODonnell show with a pacifier in her mouth. I'm assuming she was at least 8 years old, since that was the minimum age to attend a taping. I thought that was creepy. You hear people say things like "They'll figure it out by the time they go to college" as solace to those of us who have a hard time teaching our little ones difficult things (like how to live without a pacifier, or how to use a toilet instead of a diaper), but I wonder. However, even if one girl disapproved of Ellen's pacifier at church, I'm pretty sure the rest of the congregation was grateful for it. At least, I'm sure my ward is happy when my daughter has hers.

  5. As long as she doesn't call it a "binky" I'm okay with it. I sucked my thumb until second grade, and look a me...
(There was a relapse of thumb in fourth grade but it was short lived due to changed thumb/mouth shape.)

  6. My oldest had his pacifier until a few months after his third birthday. I can still remember how bad those first few days were. Number two will be two in March and I'm dreading taking his pacifier away. So much so that he might be three and still sucking on that thing.

  7. She sounds quite a bit like my two-year-old niece. The other day she called my dad, but instead of responding to what he said, she just said, "Hello. I don't know very much about you, but it makes me uncomfortable hearing you sing."

  9. The best part about Ellen, and forgive me for repeating myself, is that she sets a person at ease. She already has that most crucial of conversation skills at age 2. I know a lot of people who don't have that skill at age 52. She's a pleasure.

  10. My boys had them until they were almost three.
I don't think my middle son (now almost 15) has forgiven me for taking it away.

  11. I'm with Carly. Not many 2 year-olds greet you with a "Oh HI! I like your shirt! And your lips!" She's adorably endearing. She never seems like she's just phoning it in.

When I think of Ellen, I think of her as British.

  13. Love the skirt. And, I love the name Ellen. And I think Ellen sounds like the cutest little girl on the planet.
