I Missed You at My Ward Christmas Party a Few Months Ago

Does it look like a winter wonderland? Good. That was the plan.

Ellen was at the end of her rope by the time dinner was served. But she turned on the charm for Santa Claus.

Fresh delicious salad. I don't like salad very much but I like bagged salad even less. A wonderful woman named Ellen cut up the veggies for this salad. I gave her this job because she is new in the ward and her name is Ellen, like my daughter. She got sick and couldn't come to the party, but the salad was (presumably) uncontaminated.
Here is the activities committee sneaking cake in the kitchen. Yes, we coordinated our outfits with each other and with the centerpieces on purpose. That cake is from Maglebys. It is surprisingly affordable (ever priced out pie for a ward party?) And that was not the first or the last piece I ate of it. In fact--and I can tell you this now--I put a box of it in my car while the Relief Society was packaging up the other leftovers for a funeral the next day. What? You think I'm going to hell? MAGLEBYS CAKE IS MUCH TOO RICH FOR THE BEREAVED.

That is my bishop. Can you believe how cute he is? He's married to my co-committee chair--Awkward! Just kidding. It's not awkward. I mean, it's not like I'm in love with him. What? Seriously. I'm not. It's just rare for a bishop to be so handsome.Except in the case of my friend, Mark Magleby, who just became the bishop of my old ward. He too is extremely good looking. I'm totally not in love with him either. Why--does it seem like I'm in love with him? That is so weird because I'm totally not. Anyway, it was a great party and my wonderful ward photographer gave me these beautiful pictures even though he just had surgery. Look, I never said it would be easy to be my ward photographer. I only said it would be worth it.

What's with the rash of handsome bishops?

  1. handsome bishops have been in our lives for awhile. Remember Bishop Sandstrom? (before the stroke!)

  2. I have a handsome bishop named Jim Blair. I'm not in love with him, but his second counselor tells me to say that I am in love with him (in which "him" modifies the second counselor, not Jim).

    Every blogger a missionary.

  3. Dang it, Jim. Adjectives and adverbs are modifiers. What's the word I'm looking for?

  4. Here's a bit of trivia. Mark Magleby was my thesis advisor and occasional art history professor. And I want your ward party decorating skills...I do okay, but it never looks the way I want it to.

  5. our wedding reception decorations looked a lot like that. i'm trying to decide if it's better to say that your party looked like my wedding reception, or that my wedding reception looked like a ward party.

  6. I'm pro cake stealing. Just so you know.

  7. Hannah's reception had lights like that. The resemblance pretty much stops there. (Terrill Wedding Receptions are way too classy to be ward parties - does that sound snobby??))

But your Ward Christmas Party Decor is pretty much outstanding.

They always "dim the lights" at our ward parties - maybe to hide the oldness of the bagged salad??

Our wcp this year had "breakfast for dinner" and it was pouring rain out - I felt sorry for the chairman.

I NEVER want to be activities chair.

And we had a handsome bishop when Harry was bishop!! (I was and still am in love with him too!)

  8. Thanks, Granny Babs, for asserting that my party was outstanding in an unclassy way. Big Harry is super handsome--I've always thought so.

I was never that "into" Bishop Sandstrom. Mark Jarman had my heart. And kept it.

I loved Jim Blair in high school, but I'm over him now.

  9. Kacy-I have a great idea! Maybe next year you can come here an do my ward party (just recycle you party from last year) and I can go to your ward and recycle my party? Sound good? I am too tired to keep thinking up party decorations.

I totally would have kept the cake, too.

I sure hope his shirt says Progress and not Ogre.

  11. You know the tissue paper pom-poms you did for Halloween? My favorite consignment shop is using the identical idea in white, pink and red for valentine-iness.

  12. I'd like to know more. Is there a toll free number I could call?

  13. Kacy - by it's very nature a ward party has to be "universal" while a wedding reception is "personal" but perhaps it's just semantics.

Did the entire Ward Activities Committee have matching clothing? Did you carry flowers? Did you all go for mani/pedis together the day before. Did it all cost a very lot of money? Did you send out engraved invites?

    You follow my drift.

And you did have outstanding decor - verily even "classy" decor.

  14. And that's no fair, your ward building has lovely, matching chairs for the cultural hall.

For classy wedding receptions, we in Monrovia have to rent chairs.

  15. You have handsome bishops because they are no longer the old men in the ward. They are your age now. :) I'll miss you on LRS, glad I can check in here.

  16. I wish you were in our ward. Our parties (the two or so we have in the course of the year) don't have nearly the panache of yours. In fact, I wish you were my counselor in YW. In even truer fact, I wish you were the president of our YW.

  17. I love that you are on the activities committee and that you did Christmas dinner up right. How fun that Mark is the bishop. He will be awesome.

  18. Can you tell me how you strung the lights in the gym? I'm in charge this year and have been wanting this exact idea!
If you have any tips on where you got tablecloths and other decor, that would be so great. nikinoel02@gmail.com
    THANKS SO MUCH!
