Wallow In Sadness

I really enjoy making play lists for specific occasions. I wish it were my job. Until I get that job, I will continue making play lists for specific situations that I just make up. I made the following play list for you for when you are depressed. But it's not to cheer you up. That would be a totally different play list. This is for the time (and that time should last for only about ten songs) you want to wallow in sadness and feel sorry for yourself. It's for when you want to indulge your depression. I'm not trying to make anybody suicidal--it's just a very specific play list. It is called Exquisite Sadness.

  1. I object to the inclusion of Song Sung Blue. It is positively CHEERFUL. If you didn't understand English you'd think it was about ponies.

  2. You are right about Song Sung Blue. But it's not about ponies. It's about a song sung blue. In other words, it is about exquisite sadness.

  3. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl. Year after year. Nice inclusion of that song. I hadn't heard it. It is exquisite. It is sad. It reminds me of my youth, although not for sad reasons. For good music reasons.

  4. To be clear, I hadn't heard that live version of that song. The album song is an old friend.

  5. Now that I'm thoroughly depressed...what a way to start my morning.
Can you make me a new running mix because I am sooooooo bored of my old one?

  6. It's important to wallow when you want to. Thanks for the prep work.

I, too, need another (MORE) workout mix. Your fans have spoken.

  7. "all these things that i've done" is on my running playlist and i usually cry when i listen to it but not because i think of exquisite sadness. just because it feels good.

  9. Ah! Exquisite sadness is exquiste! Everybody hurts is my favorite self-pity song of the 90s (but also listened to Strange Currencies a lot when I broke up with Jake for awhile), and I enjoy strumming hallelujah on my guitar these days if the kids fight or I burn dinner or I have thirty pounds I can't lose...

And I'm okay with song sung blue, but Shiloh is sadder.

  10. Any chance of a playlist to help you through when three-of-your-four- children-have-stomach-flu-and-you've-gotta-keep-going?

    I could use that.

  11. See, this is the perfect play list for me today! Can I listen to the songs over and over and over? You are so awesome, I mean really, who else would think of doing this? :)

  12. Thank you for not putting the Hallelujah by the seven billion other people who have covered it. Your true genius shines through when you use Cohen.

  13. Oh Kacy, you are a gem. I had to stop listening to this though because I was becoming exquisitely sad.

But for reals, can I make a major comment here? David Gilmour's voice is much better (album version) than Roger Waters for Wish You Were Here. I mean, I love Water's voice. However, for such a pitiful song, you need Gilmour's fluid tone. One of the best Pink Floyd songs ever though.

The Killers. I never want to love them, and everytime I hear a song by them, I can't help falling in love...

speaking of which I can never take Elvis Presley seriously. sorry. It's just how I feel.

I need to a new running mix too. Hop to it. I guess you got your dream job now...

  14. My 4 year old recognized Alone Again from Ice Age, Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It made me laugh to think of the little squirrel creature and the acorn that he left alone.

  15. How about a first-vacation-together-besides-honeymoon playlist for me and my husband? We're headed to Hawaii for our 10 year anniversary and we need a good soundtrack to accompany our vacation.
Running schmunning, but I'm sure you would make a cool running playlist and I would listen to it while eating or something.

  16. You and my husband would be BFFs for so many reasons, one of which is that I knew he loved me when he made me a mix tape.

  17. I think I like the REM version of Everybody Hurts better, but-holy cow-Patty Smith sings a pretty miserable version.
    How about Neil Sedaka's Solitaire?

  18. Ok, wait...No.
Karen Carpenter's version of Solitaire makes it tragically exquisite sadness!

  19. No Morrissey? He turned wallowing into a full-time career with throngs of wallowing fans.

  20. "Til I Can Gain Control Again" by This Mortal Coil is my favorite wallowing song.

  21. Great list.
If I am even remotely sad, a little Sarah McLachlan (Arms of the Angel) pushes me right over the edge into exquisitely sad.
