Books I Read in December: 2010

Remember 2010? Personally, I've moved on to 2011 and I'm not looking back but here is my last book list from December 2010. I read 60 books this year. Good for me!

Johhny Tremain by Esther Forbes

Sam had to read this for his History class so I got it from the library and read it too. Or I should say, "instead," since he still hasn't read it. Watching the movie in class demotivated him somewhat because after you've seen the movie, why would you read the book? I kind of agree with this--you should read the book before you watch the movie. I hate having the endings spoiled. This is a good book.  I like it.

The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley

This book is pretty delightful. It was recommended to me by a lot of you and I appreciate the suggestions. I'll have to go back and read The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. It's always checked out so I started with this one. It should be a great series.

The Book of Fate by Brad Meltzer

I've been destined to read a Brad Melzter book since I became infatuated with his celebrity playlist on iTunes. He has a show on the History Channel now that I like to watch. Anyway, this book was compelling and John-Grishamy. Brad Meltzer seems pretty cool.

Cassette From My Ex Edited by Jason Bitner

Christian got me all the books that have been sitting in my Amazon Shopping Cart for over a year now. I store them there so I will remember what I want to read. It was a very thoughtful gift. This was one of them and it is a treat to read. It's a bunch of short essays on mix tapes--with the playlists included.

The Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia

This reminds that I also read (but forgot to write down--which means I read 61 books this year, but who's counting?) The One Hundred by Nina Garcia also.

I love Nina. She's really rich. I'm going to spend the rest of my life acquiring my own one hundered wardrobe essentials. I already have some of them. Nina really hates terry cloth robes. I don't get that. But I'll do whatever she says. Nina was considered a Colombian princess when she came to the United States to go to boarding school. Can you imagine? She still likes to make fun of duck boots.

Favorite book of 2010? I'm always looking for recommendations.

  1. That is a bit like asking me to tell you which of my children is my favorite, so here's a few:

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
    The Help
The Book Thief (although it took me a minute to get into it)

and then maybe a few that I can't say exactly why I liked them, because they deal with difficult subject matter but...
    In My Hands (Irene Gut)
    Little Bee

  2. I'm currently reading "The Finkler Question". So far so good. I have to keep a dictionary close by, but you probably wouldn't need to.

  3. "Half Broke Horses" by Jeanette Wells
(if you haven't read her other novel "The Glass Castle" that's another must-read)
"Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach
"Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen (hurry! It's being made into a movie!)

  4. I love Bel Canto by Anne Patchett and I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith.

  5. I loved Johnny Tremain - didn't read it until I was an adult - but I have a theory that we'd do a better job of teaching American history to kids if we used core novels like Johnny Tremain, My Brother Sam is Dead, Witch of Blackbird Pond, Across Five Aprils, etc.

It would capture my attention anyway!!

And I too have a hard time saying a favorite book, besides Little Women and Gone With the Wind!

  7. Have you tried out Goodreads.com? I love using it to keep track of my "to read" list of books and as a side bonus I can see recommendations from friends too and add them to my list. I kind of love it.

  10. Oh - and although it wasn't one of my favorites - Brad Meltzer's Heroes for My Son is an interesting compilation of people that he thinks are incredible.

  11. The Glass Castle, even though someone else already suggested it. (Although, not to be jerky, The Glass Castle is a memoir, and not a novel, which makes it even more amazing.)

And All Souls, by Michael MacDonald. It's sort of like Glass Castle, actually.

And Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger. Possibly my favorite book of all time.

  12. The Wednesday Wars
    by Gary D. Schmidt

This is one of the best books that I've read this year. It's such a good story and the characters are so endearing.

  13. 61 books is impressive!! I thought I was doing well with 45 in 2010. I keep a list of books I want to read in my Amazon wish list as well, but I'm not sure why really, because that's what Goodreads is for!

Anyway. My favorites from 2010 were:

    The Road
    Here Be Dragons
The Other Side of the Bridge

  14. My favorite book this year was
The Shadow of The Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, although it does have some language and a couple of racy parts. It is lovely and really has some great writing even translated from the Spanish.

  15. Why do you read books? Are you too poor to have the internet?

  16. New here-I love these book lists. I'm ALWAYS looking for new books to read. I have to make all decisions (and lists with a mapped out plan) before going to the library because I am still in the stage of taking small, disobedient children to the library with me. I will definitely be adding some of these books to my "to read" list.

Two of my favorite books of 2010:
    The Help
Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (I know, I know-but give it a chance. It is so wrong, yet so right).

My complete list of top 10 books from 2010 just in case you are interested: http://vermillionrules.blogspot.com/2010/12/top-ten-reads-of-2010.html

I'll be waiting with bated breath for January's list!!
