Awesome Ladies Who Turn 40 This Year

Today is my birthday. I'm 40. Older than you thought? Ah, well. What can I do about it? Nothing except embrace it. So I do. I'm not bad for 40. And I'm not afraid. Don't be scared to age! Look at all these women who are doing it with grace and style:

Tina Fey is 42. She would have been a senior when I was a sophomore. Oh! I would have idolized her. She was born with just a little more talent than me--but I'm doing what I can with what I've got. Tina's the real deal. Good for her.

Selma Blair turns 40 this week, just like me. She's cool. She looks good with short hair and fishnets. I'm going to wear fishnets at least until I'm 50. At that time I will reevaluate. The last time I wore fishnets to church a man commented on them in a way that made me think my fishnets were kind of a distraction for him. I've still got it!

Amanda Peet has been 40 since January! Look at the sparkle in her eyes. It's going to be OK.

Cute and a year older than me, Rachel Weisz is married to Daniel Craig. She is a hero.

Oh Gwynnie. I kind of hate you. But you turn 40 this fall, and you are so beautiful.

Awesome, talented, beautiful, and hilar. Maya Rudolph turns 40 in July.

Sometimes she looks super old. . . Acting! Toni Collette turns 40 this year. She's accomplished and quirky and seems to have spunk. I like her very much.

Thandie Newton is my age and she could beat anyone in a beauty contest. Not bad for 40? She's not bad for 20.

I don't think Cameron Diaz is actually aging that well. She's my age, so let that be a lesson to you. To be fair, Cameron Diaz probably doesn't think I'm aging that well either. But we're all in this together, sister. So let's just agree that partying without sunscreen doesn't do you any favors.

Here I go into my 40s along with these good ladies, et al. S'no big deal. Wish me luck.

  1. You know all the jokes about tee shirts that say, "I'd rather be 40 than pregnant?" Well, when I turned 40, I was pregnant with Hannah. I was also the nursery leader!! On my 40th birthday, a phalanx of nursery kiddos came to serenade me!

So you are doing just fine!! (But we love Hannah - it was totally worth being 40 and pregnant to have her!!)

  2. Happy birthday! I love this list. Particularly since I turned 40 in April. So far, it's not so bad. More or less the same as 39. One weird thing is seeing a Sex & the City rerun and realizing that the characters are all younger than me (expect for that cougar Samantha - and when I hit my mid 40's THAT comparison is going to be rough). But other than that - nothing too earth shattering.

  5. It isn't so bad, I have been doing it since May. I use it to my advantage a lot like when I forget to do things, I remind the kids that i'm old now so get over it. Anyway, happy 40th!

  6. I didn't think I'd like to be 40 but the closer I get (I'll be there in 2 years), the better it's looking.

By the way, you don't look a day over 27.

  12. Keep climbing the hill, sister. You aren't over it yet! Happy birthday. I turned 47 three days ago. The peak of the hill is now within sight and I'm freaking out a little bit. Just a little...
