Ellen Born: So What Else is New?

A lot has changed over the past few months. Here are the highlights.

I had a baby girl and named her Ellen. Her birth was pretty normal, and by normal I mean immodest and undignified--which is normal for me. Of particular note was that when the epidural went into my spine I went blind. The anesthesiologist got super defensive. He was a sturdy little dude who probably wrestled in high school and who probably calls himself a "doctor" whenever possible. I can tell he feels cool and cutting edge because he wheels his little epidural kit around the hospital in one of those stainless steel tool cases--which is cool, but he probably got the idea to keep his implements in there from his hair stylist which is a little less cutting edge. Whatever the case, he should know that he needn't worry. I don't' sue people who give me epidurals. Period.

We settled on her name at the last minute, trading the whimsy of Lucy for the grace of Ellen. But we just call her Blanket. Do I miss being pregnant? Of course. That's why I still wear maternity clothes.

Before I had the baby we moved into a new house. It's nice. We bought it at an auction. One day, as the story goes, we were on our way to Arctic Circle and Taco Bell for dinner. We saw that the house was available and we put a bid on it. Then we went to Arctic Circle and Taco Bell. The next day we went to the auction and got the house. They gave us the keys and we started moving our stuff in. That first night, we had Arbys.

And finally, I don't have TV anymore. I hesitate to even mention this lest you think I'm one of those people, which I guess I am. I won't go into why I don't' have TV but I'm sure you can imagine that Comcast being stupid idiots has something to do with it. At any rate, the first couple of weeks without TV were very difficult. But you get used to it. Do I miss flipping through channels? Yes. Do I crave the comfort TV food that is Law and Order? Occasionally. But I watch most shows online and order others from ITunes. It's OK. I watch fewer shows. My kids fight more. Sometimes I just sit and stare out the window a la David Putty. Life goes on.

  2. I've been wondering if I needed to just stop checking. Strange that someone you don't even know could keep checking to see if you were back all these months. I guess it was the pregnancy bond. I loved the post you made before you left. Glad to hear that all is well and the baby is beautiful! Thanks for making me laugh. :)

  5. I'm so glad you're back in with the world wide web. I'm a big fan of routines, too, and also details. So, if you want to mention what it is you ordered at Taco Bell, Arctic Circle, and Arby's, that would be something I'm interested in knowing. But I don't think you should go around telling people you don't have tv, though. They might get the wrong idea. . . I'm not being judgmental, I'm just being a good friend.

I was just about to bug you guys via email about whether you had actually given birth. Now I can just leave you alone.

Congratulations. Ellen is beautiful (name and baby).

Temporary blindness...I imagine that was a bit disconcerting.

Good luck on the home selling, I feel that pain!

  12. Remember, today at eleven. Marlsven and Rivers will be there, it'll be great. You don't want this comment to haunt you forever, which it should.

  13. Congratulations on Ellen. She is a total babe.

And thanks for blogging again. I have two things to say:
Sorry for exploiting aprons. You never know how those things happen.

And two:thanks for coming to my birthday party when you were still pregnant. That meant a lot to your biggest fanster.

Oh and three: I am sorry that you don't have a tv anymore now that I have my own show. Understandable.

  14. We have to stop meeting like this! I have spent the last 2 weeks getting "permanently failed" replies on every email address I ever had for you. And now your address has changed.

I need a birth announcement with a return address - you might get a lovely gift - even an apron maybe.

I am so into aprons - and it has nothing to do with their current popularity - I've always loved them. (I'm already vintage!)

But I was delighted to hear of the birth - keep in touch - at least your whereabouts.

  17. Hanner there is just no escaping it. You have to keep up with these things. RIP Charlie, I will miss you so bad.

I am sorry about the blindness, but I really enjoyed your description of the anesthesiologist. Mine wasn't so fab either. I didn't go blind but I did go completely numb on my left side (couldn't lift my leg) whilst my right side felt every contraction. That guy wasn't defensive, but the "anesthesia technician" or whatever was definitely very defensive. She came in to "fix" the lopsidedness and kept telling me that she was giving me "extra drugs," and when my husband asked what kind of "drugs" exactly they were that she was injecting into me, she said sharply, "What, don't you trust me? They are drugs." She kind of had an accent, so maybe she didn't speak English very well, maybe that was the problem.
