Last Night

Last night something very special happened. I was invited to Jordan Commons to see The Help for free because I am a rad blogger. . . I guess? So my plus one [Lisa] and I casually but excitedly drove to Jordan Commons and enjoyed a wonderful movie. Well, that's what could have happened. Instead we entered Jordan's Landing into our geo-tracking device and were too late to get a place in The Help at Jordan Commons when we eventually got there. (Who names two theaters almost the same thing?) I guess they don't hold seats--even for rad bloggers. It was a serendipitous turn of events, as you will see.

We bought tickets to Captain America whichlet'sbehonest sounded a little more exciting than The Help. Captain America is great. It looks amazing. I love Cap's outfit. It's really perfect. And the shield which seems a little cumbersome is actually quite awesome in the movie. (Just like Thor's hammer.) Stay after the credits and you'll be excited. Joss Wheden is driving The Avengers bus and I am so on board. Captain America is enjoyable and well done.  X-Men: First Class is still better. Well, it is.

We were some of the last people to leave the theater and as we walked out Lisa made an off-handed comment about going to another movie. Right then and there. Another movie. Chuckle chuckle. As if! Well, friends. Ima tell you what we did. We did it. We sent some texts and made some calls and we got right back in line and went to a second movie. Two ladies. Two movies. Two 44 ounces of soda [each] (totaling 176 oz).

We chose the 10:15pm showing of Cowboys and Aliens. The experience of going to two movies in a night was divine and unprecedented. It's how I want to live. I give an A+ to the premise of Cowboys and Aliens. Cowboys? And Aliens? Yes. And yes! But--and here's the twist--there's no twist. There's no meta. It's not self-aware. It's awesome, in it's way (the aliens are SCARY) but in a world where Inception exists, I can't get super excited about a one-note western even if the one note is Daniel Craig. He is so good, by the way, and can carry a movie just by wearing chaps and walking around. The gruff voice-offs with Harrison Ford are also a bonus, to be sure, but aside from being a part of the greatest night of my life Cowboys and Aliens is just fair to middling.  Still, I wouldn't change a thing about last night.

How do I see so many movies? How do I read so many books? How do I blog so much? How do I do it?

I'll tell you how: By not running marathons.

  1. By not running marathons?! That really made me laugh. Good job on seeing two movies. Remember the olden days when you could just sit in the theater and they would let you see the same movie twice without checking.

  2. Speaking of marathons, my husband and I do movie marathons A LOT. We will spend the bulk of our Saturday in the movie theater with, yes, our hugeio popcorn and refillable mugs. We are irresponsible parents, but are up on all the latest movies. As a side note, I just finished watching "The Power of One" (I highly recommend the book) and discovered that Daniel Craig played the evil bully Africaner in the movie. It ruined me just a little for future Bond movies.

  3. "By not running marathons" is the best thing I've read all week. Seriously, who has time for those?

  4. One day when I was a sophomore at BYU, I ditched class and took the bus to that movie theater in the University Mall parking lot and watched 3 movies in a row all by myself. I fondly think of it as one of the best days of my life.

So that's how I get so much done. I was wondering...and you nailed it right on the head. Seriously, I laughed out loud about the marathons! Jerri

  6. I laughed so hard my husband wanted to get in on the joke!!! As two people who are training for a half-marathon (his first, my second) we totally get this! Thanks for the laughs.
Great, now I want to go to a movie marathon!

  7. That last line is my favorite line ever written by a human.

  8. Yeah, that last line was fantastic. And I've been considering running one this year, and now I've decided against it, just so I can have the chance to watch two movies in one night. I probably won't do it, but still..there's always the chance.

  9. Do you remember when there were double features at the drive-ins? My greatest regret in life is not being able to share those with my kids.

  10. That last part gave me a huge head-rush burst of love for you. Whooo. I feel a little faint.

When I was in college we had a $1 movie theater. I used to go by myself and watch two movies. SO FUN. And so weird, coming out of it: is it dinnertime? bedtime? I have no idea!

  11. So that's why Daniel Craig always looked so familiar. The light eyes... GROSS, I hate that guy from Power of One.

Congratulations on packing so much into your life. And I didn't mean that sarcastically. I don't run marathons _or_ watch tons of movies so I am impressed. Although I do try to read books occasionally. And I watch a lot of _Scrubs_ and (lately, thanks to you) _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_.

  12. I don't run marathons, but I do run, and I'll tell you why...so that I can have all the butter I want on my popcorn while I watch 2 movies! Now that's a win-win.
Sorry you missed The Help. I'm coming to town, perhaps we could go together?
And Hailey, I don't know you, but I thought I'd share that where I live in western PA they have drive-ins with double features and it ROCKS!

  13. Double feature? It's what I asked for (and received) for my tenth wedding anniversary. I'm glad you have also lived the dream.

(And I'm not joking when I say I look fondly back at that day.)

  14. @dede That is awesome. That might be worth the trip from New York!

  15. That was the best night of my life. Am I overreacting? Am I overselling? Am I exaggerating? NO. And that is what makes my life both tragic and wonderfully beautiful. Yes, babies grow up and become grown, but then you find yourself in a double feature, and you're drinking a raspberry coke zero you didn't know existed mere minutes before you drinking it. Life's funny that way.

  16. Marathons are overrated.

  17. Kacy, since they did give you a free pass and all, you probably owe The Help people a review anyway, even without seeing it. You could improvise and use your blog power to summon the gods of vicarious cinema.

Strangely, what I got the most out of your other reviews was the part about "But--and here's the twist--there's no twist." I can't express in enough languages how enlightening that comment was, because it summed it all up for me in a way that even I can't know. I like reviews like that which convey to me on a visceral level what I can take away from a movie without having watched it myself, or really ever needing to watch it (I think).

In a future review, maybe you can have a sidenote to tell me what missing that movie would mean to me in my life, because now I'm feeling a lot of angst along with this sudden joy, feeling that I have to watch all of these since you enjoyed them so much, and I don't want you to have more enjoyment than me. If we have the same amount of enjoyment, then that's OK too.

  18. Daniel Craig certainly does carry that movie. And he does it so well in those chaps.

  19. You and Lisa are lucky to have each other and that night. I wish I had a Lisa. Or a Kacy. And a raspberry coke zero. Sigh.

Eliza, you're exactly right. I wondered why he looked familiar too. He obviously played that part right (in the Power of One) because I hated him too! Jerri
