Something I Like About My Husband Volume 7

It is not easy for me to write this in a month where my husband will be on business trips for a total of three weeks. I'm very put out about it. Am I glad to be married? That my husband is alive? That he is employed? That I don't have to work? Would it be worse to be a single mom or in the military? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and a resounding yes. But still--it sucks. To those of you whose husbands work at home or are home by 5pm, I bear you no malice. In fact, I'm happy for you. But--it must be said--you're sissies.

What I like about my husband is that he bought a WaterPik [in between trips] that came with six different specific heads. He thoughtfully chose a head for each family member--periodontal pockets for me, braces scrubber for Sam, classic for Maggie, toothbrusher for Ben--and wrote their names on it in permanent marker. You can't be a too much of a deadbeat dad if you know the brushing weaknesses of everyone in your family. I give credit where credit is due. I guess WaterPik spouts are my love language.

  1. This was a post that had to be written. Yes, others have it worse, but it still sucks to have your husband gone a lot. Consistently. Gone.

And, I might add, for those women whose husbands work from home or have flexibility to be home anytime BEFORE 5? Well, we don't want to hear from you. It's not helpful.

Dental care as a love language is really very sweet.

  2. Sweet husband.

And can I cut, and paste, and steal the last sentence of the first paragraph? I've wanted to say that very thing for years now.

  4. That does suck when the hubby is gone.
Not fun when they work graveyards either.

  5. I feel guilty every time your husband has to be gone and mine stays home, but I wouldn't volunteer to change it either. Thanks for the sacrafice!

Just send your two youngest ones to my house to play when you need a break.

And stock up on Donettes so you will be ready for the next time. :)

  6. I used to envy women whose husbands came and went regularly. Mine didn't go away overnight much, but he did work very long hours - the kids were in bed when he left and in bed when he got home. It doesn't seem to have harmed them however.

I think if he'd been around more I would have been more patient however. You know, there is pressure to be a model mom when you think the dad will be walking in any minute!

And I am impressed at his knowledge of their dental needs - although my husband often surprised me with vast stores of knowledge about our kids' needs in various areas. Is is it a guy thing?

  9. I soooo understand! My husband travels a lot too and I can't help but be mad about it cause it does totally suck!! Especially when you have all high maintenance children like me who, without a breather from dad, drive me to near, if not real, insanity. I resent those women whose husbands work cakewalk hours...it annoys me how easy they have it! At least when my husband's home, he's really hands on.

  10. I am super impressed by your husband's dental awareness. Hygeine is my love language. BUT I resent being called a sissy when I've traded having two dimes to rub together for having my husband home (I had to--I only have a few "good" days a week where I can do my mom job well and he generously picks up the slack). I'm just kidding--I AM kind of a wimp, but I challenge the husbandless to rock the good life with no debt but a mortgage, plus three kids on as little as $1900 some months..it's a trade off, but it works. I feel for you practically-single mamas, though.

  11. My mom used to be on the WaterPik box and my husband is gone a lot. Just thought you would appreciate both of those facts.

  12. "it must be said--you're sissies." I couldn't have said it better myself and it helps me feel less jealous. Like, sure, any idiot can raise kids on their own for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Knowing that other people also have husbands who work long hours or go out of town at inopportune times, actually does make me feel better. Less alone perhaps. Don't know what that says about me.
